HOLY BAPTISM

What is thy name.
Answer: N.
What dost thou desire?
Answer: Baptism

Beloved, it is required of those to be baptized, First, that they should renounce the devil, and all his works, and the pomps and vanity of this wicked world. Secondly, that they should believe all the articles of the Christian faith.

N., receive the sign of the cross in thy forehead, in token that hereafter thou shalt not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified, and manfully to fight under his banner against sin, the world, and the devil, and to continue Christ’s faithful soldier and servant unto thy life’s end. Amen.

Ephphatha. May the Lord Jesus who made the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak open thine ears to hear his word and thy lips to speak his praise.

Prayer for making a catechumen.
Almighty and immortal God, the aid of all that need, the helper of all that flee to thee for succour, the life of them that believe, and the resurrection of the dead: we call upon thee for this thy servant, that he, coming to thy holy baptism, may receive remission of sin by spiritual regeneration. Receive him, O Lord, as thou hast promised by thy well-beloved Son, saying, Ask, and ye shall have; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. So give now unto us that ask; let us that seek, find; open the gate unto us that knock; that this thy servant, being washed from sin, may enjoy thy heavenly benediction, and may come to the eternal kingdom, which thou hast promised by Christ our Lord. Amen.

The candidate is anointed with the oil of catechumens.

We anoint @   thee with the oil of salvation in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ. May he strengthen thee with his power, who liveth and reigneth for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BAPTISMAL LITURGY

(The Priest blesses the font, if is not already blessed.)

Dearly beloved, thou hast come to be baptized, that God of his bounteous mercy will grant unto thee that thing which by nature thou canst not have, that being baptized with water and the Holy Ghost, thou mayest be received into Christ’s holy Church, and be made a lively member of the same. Thou, for thy part, must promise that thou wilt renounce the devil and all his works, and constantly believe God's holy Word.
I demand therefore:

THE RENUNCIATIONS

Dost thou renounce Satan?
I renounce him.
And all his works?
I renounce them.
And all his pomps and vanities?
I renounce them.

THE PROFESSION OF FAITH

Dost thou believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth?
Answer: I believe.

Dost thou believe in Jesus Christ his only-begotten Son our Lord? And that he was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary; that he suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; that he went down into hell, and also did rise again the third day; that he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; and from thence shall come again at the end of the world, to judge the quick and the dead?
Answer: I believe.

And dost thou believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Catholic Church; the Communion of Saints; the Remission of sins; the Resurrection of the flesh; and everlasting life after death?
Answer: All this I steadfastly believe.

THE BAPTISM

N, I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

The candidate is anointed on the crown of the head with chrism.

Almighty and everliving God, who hath vouchsafed to regenerate thee by water and the Holy Ghost, and hath given unto thee forgiveness of all thy sins, himself anoint  @   thee with the chrism of salvation in Jesus Christ his Son our Lord unto eternal life.

The candidate is clothed with a white garment.

Take this white vesture for a token of the innocency which by God's grace in this holy sacrament of baptism is given unto thee; that after this transitory life thou mayest be partaker of the life everlasting. Amen.

The Candidate, or in the case of an infant, a Godparent lights a candle from the Easter candle.

Receive the light of Christ. Mayest thou, enlightened by Christ, always walk as a child of light, and when the Lord shall come, mayest thou go to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly courts.
