in the absence of a priest

The people stand.
(Entrance chant or hymn)

Minister: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
                Amen.

Kyrie eleison is said or sung.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
(Kyrie eleison.)
(Christe eleison.)
(Kyrie eleison.)

Then follows the Gloria (on most Sundays and holy days).

Glory be to God on high,
and in earth peace, goodwill towards men.
We praise thee, we bless thee,
we worship thee, we glorify thee,
we give thanks to thee for thy great glory,
O Lord God, heavenly King,
God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ,
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
For thou only art holy;
thou only art the Lord;
thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Let us pray.         (the people remain standing)

All pray silently for a while.

The Collect follows, ending: . . . world without end. Amen.

All sit for the lesson(s). Each lesson ends:

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

A hymn or chant and Alleluya may be sung.

The people stand and face the Gospel.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to N.
Glory be to thee, O Lord

At the end of the Gospel:

This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

A sermon may follow, the people sitting.

The Creed is sung or said on Sundays and holy days. (Stand)

I believe in one God,
The Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
and of all things visible and invisible:
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God,
begotten of his Father before all worlds:
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God, begotten not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made:
Who for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven;
(here bow)
and was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary,
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered and was buried;
and the third day he rose again according to the scriptures,
and ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of the Father:
And he shall come again with glory
to judge both the quick and the dead:
whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and giver of life,
who proceedeth from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together
is worshipped and glorified,
who spake by the prophets.
And I believe one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.
And I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The General Intercessions may follow here.

Minister:

Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways; draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

Almighty God,
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
maker of all things, judge of all men;
we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness,
which we from time to time most grievously have committed
by thought, word and deed,
against thy divine majesty,
provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us.
We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings;
the remembrance of them is grievous unto us;
the burden of them is intolerable.
Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father:
for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may ever hereafter
serve and please thee in newness of life,
to the honour and glory of thy name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Minister (in these or other suitable words):

Grant, we beseech thee, merciful Lord, to thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins, and serve thee with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A hymn may be sung. Meanwhile the Sacrament is taken from the tabernacle and put on the altar.
The offerings of the people may be received.

The Prayer of Humble Access may be said.

We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord,
trusting in our own righteousness,
but in thy manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table:
but thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy.
Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,
so to eat the Flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ,
and to drink his Blood,
that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his Body,
and our souls washed through his most precious Blood,
and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Minister: Let us pray. As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say:

Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

The Minister continues:

Deliver us, O Lord, from every evil, past, present and to come, and favourably grant peace in our days, that by the help of thine availing mercy, we may ever both be free from sin, and secure from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

All kneel.

The Minister shows the Sacrament to the people.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world.

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but say the word only and my soul shall be healed.

Communion

The Body of Christ. Amen.

The Minister returns the Sacrament to the tabernacle.

All pray in silence.

Let us pray.

There follows this, or some other suitable prayer:

O Lord Jesu Christ, who hast ordained this Holy Sacrament to be a pledge of thy love, and a continual remembrance of thy passion: Grant that we, who partake thereof by faith with thanksgiving, may grow up into thee in all things, until we come to thy eternal joy; who with the Father and the Holy Ghost livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen.

The blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst us, and remain with us, always. Amen.

Depart in peace.
Thanks be to God.

(Hymn)

NOTE: When Holy Communion is given from the reserved Sacrament, it is in one kind only. Communion in either kind is still the complete communion in the Body and Blood of Christ.

NOTE TO OUR READERS: this form is for use only in an emergency. It was devised in a hurry one Easter when it proved impossible to serve all the churches. Normally it is better for lay people, properly prepared, to conduct Mattins or Evensong.
