Introduction
Some of the documents listed below are intended as contributions to a liturgical “third way” that has been largely, and I believe regrettably, abandoned. The successors to the Tractarians, satisfied to be inheritors of a fine vernacular tradition, incorporated the Book of Common Prayer into their worship (a) by supplementing it where it was lacking (as for instance in the Holy Week rites) with translations of ancient prayers into a style of English that would not seem too incongruous next to Cranmer’s own work and (b) by tinkering with it, e.g. by rearrangement, to conform it more closely to the traditional order.
The appearance of the new Roman vernacular services seem to have marked the beginning of the end of that approach, and as new Anglican rites pour from the presses the once common term “Prayer Book Catholic” would probably convey very little to any one of middle age and under.
Perhaps as we undergo yet another liturgical upheaval and “Common Worship” is heavily promoted in the parishes, some will take the opportunity to go back to something older and better, and lay hold of the treasures which are the birthright of all Englishmen: the Authorized Version of the Bible, Coverdale’s Psalter and the Book of Common Prayer.
