Mass for the Queen

Compiled from Prayers and Services annexed to the Book of Common Prayer 1837 and the Anglican Missal

Introit Ps. 8.
O LORD
our Governor: how excellent is thy Name in all the world. Ps. 144.  Lord, what is man, that thou hast such respect unto him: and the son of man, that thou so regardest him? Glory be &c. As it was &c. O Lord our Governor &c.

COLLECT

O GOD, who providest for thy people by thy power and rulest over them in love: vouchsafe so to bless thy servant Elizabeth, our Queen, that under her this nation may be wisely governed and thy Church may serve thee in all godly quietness; and grant that she being devoted to thee with her whole heart, and persevering in good works unto the end, may by thy guidance come to thine everlasting kingdom. Through.

THE EPISTLE. 1 S. Peter 2.11.

DEARLY beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your conversation honest among the Gentiles; that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake; whether it be to the King, as supreme; or unto governours, as unto them that are sent by him, for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: as free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness; but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the King.

Gradual Ps. 21.
T
HE KING
shall rejoice in thy strength, O Lord: exceeding glad shall he be of thy salvation.
And why? because the King putteth his trust in the Lord: and in the mercy of the most Highest he shall not miscarry.
The King shall rejoice &c.

ALLELUYA Alleluya.
Ps. 84. Behold, O God, our defender: and look upon the face of thine Anointed. Alleluya.

THE GOSPEL S. Matthew 22.16.

AT that time the Pharisees sent out unto Jesus their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us, therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? shew me the tribute-money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose image and superscription is this? They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.

SUPER OBLATA

ALMIGHTY God, whose kingdom is everlasting and power infinite: have mercy upon the whole Church, and so rule and govern the heart of thy chosen servant Elizabeth our Queen and Governour, that she, knowing whose minister she is, may above all things seek thy honour and glory; and that we and all her subjects (duly considering whose authority she hath) may faithfully serve, honour, and humbly obey her, in thee, and for thee, according to thy blessed word and ordinance. Through.

Offertory Ps. 20.
N
OW
know I that the Lord helpeth his Anointed, and will hear him from his holy heaven: even with the wholesome strength of his right hand.

POSTCOMMUNION

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we are taught by thy holy Word, that the hearts of Kings are in thy rule and governance, and that thou dost dispose and turn them as it seemeth best to thy godly wisdom: we humbly beseech thee so to dispose and govern the heart of Elizabeth, thy servant, our Queen and Governour, that, in all his thoughts, words, and works, she may ever seek thy honour and glory, and study to preserve thy people committed to her charge, in wealth, peace, and godliness: Grant this, O merciful Father, for thy dear Son's sake.
